Body-based PsychotherapyBioenergetics is a type of body-based psychotherapy. Its main purpose is to restore flow to a person's life force by working through the physical and emotional blocks. These blocks are often experienced as feeling "stuck" or unsatisfied. We work with breath and attention, and with the person's body - to get things moving. This might mean exercises for grounding or to promote the movement of energy, such as holding difficult postures, or physically expressing emotions. The benefit of a person's energy moving more freely is that they feel more alive.
Bioenergetics uses the body as a key source of information about where a person is (and where they've been). When a person's body is put under stress, it responds in a way that reveals in detail how that person's body (and how the person) copes with the stress - and this gives the therapist information about the client's emotional history, whether they may have suffered any trauma (emotional or physical) as a child, and at what age. I have created a blog entry of my favourite quotations about body-based psychotherapy. |
Client Centred PsychotherapyThe "talk therapy" part of the work that I do (often the first 10 or 15 minutes of a session) are based on client centred psychotherapy (see the Resources Page for more information from on Carl Rogers and others). This is the foundation for therapy, and the work of deeply perceiving my clients continues through the body-based work, energy work, and any naturopathic support that I recommend.
The power of simply "being with" someone as they express what they are experiencing can't be overstated. It's amazing that something that seems so simple can have such an impact. |
Naturopathic Medicine"Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity.
"Treating both acute and chronic conditions, naturopathic treatments are chosen based on the individual patient – their physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation and traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, may also be used during treatments. "In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession’s infrastructure includes accredited educational institutions, professional licensing, national standards of practice, participation in many federal health committee initiatives, and a commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research." Energy WorkWe have physical anatomy, made up of a complex of physical systems (neurological, digestive, muscular, endocrine...) working together in a coordinated way. We also have energy anatomy. These two "bodies" or systems overlap and interrelate. An imbalance in our physical anatomy or physiology often turns up first as in imbalance in our energy levels or metabolism. When you start to heal from a chronic condition, the first signs of spring that notice may be a change in mood, a shift to a more optimistic outook, or an encouraging message from your dream life.
